When will I get my results?

Timing varies. Sometimes the sonographer can say a little on the day; often a report goes to your doctor first.

It depends on the clinic, the type of scan and who referred you. There’s no single rule.

Common patterns

  • The sonographer may tell you a little at the end, or may not be able to comment
  • A written report goes to the doctor or clinic who referred you
  • Your referrer then discusses the results with you
  • Urgent findings are usually passed on quickly

Why the sonographer may not say much

Images often need careful review, and results are best explained alongside your full medical history. Silence during the scan is normal and is not a sign of bad news.

What you can do

Ask at the end how and when results will reach you. If you haven’t heard by then, contact your referrer.

This is general information, not medical advice. Always follow the instructions from your own care team. See the scan guide.
